Preparation of superhydrophobic titanium surface via the combined modification of hierarchical micro/nanopatterning and fluorination

Abstract Adhesion of bacteria and platelets on blood-contact implants surgical devices is one the causes infections thrombus. A superhydrophobic surface serving as a protective layer can minimize adhesion contamination due to low energy. The objective this paper construct titanium implant by combination topological structure chemical coating. First, micro/nano hierarchical morphology obtained sandblasting, acid-etching, anodic oxidation. Then, energy coating material (fluoroalkylsilane, example case in study) used modify further. effects micro and/or nanoscales corresponding fluorination wettability are investigated. results show that with microroughness nanotubes successfully constructed, contact angle (CA) 44.9°, indicating good hydrophilicity. Interestingly, after being modified fluoroalkylsilane, converted from hydrophilic CA 151.4°. In contrast, modification single or nanofeatures cannot achieve superhydrophobicity, micro/nanostructures may synergistic effect for an efficient later on. Overall, our demonstrate feasibility achieving via patterning modification. proposed method expected enrich preparation technologies surfaces. Graphic abstract
